Why Kids Participate
More than20 million kids between the ages of 6 and 16 participate in organized sports.According to numerous studies, they participate because they want.
To have fun,to improve skills and learn new ones,to feel the excitement of competition,to succeed or win,and to exercise or become fit.
Here are some of the questions that new parents ask about private lessons.
Why do we need to have private lessons?
When the students are skating in a group during Learn to Skate(LTS) session, the coach doesn’t have enough time to share the information with the student individually, and therefore, the coach is not able to explain everything the student needs to know to succeed in figure skating.
What Makes a Good Coach?
Many people think that if you’ve played a sport, you’re qualified to coach it.Wrong!
If this were true, all actors would make good directors, and all students would make
good teachers.
A good coach…
Know the sport-and kids.He or she must know about the physical development of boys and girls-what children are and not capable of doing.
Know about differences in personality-that what is right for one child isn’t necessarily
right for another.
Understands each child’s motivation for skating. Some kids are very serious about competing;others are there because a good friend is skating.
Understands, and can deal with, differences in children physical and emotional maturity and appreciates each child for her or his individuality.
Is sensitive to children from various social, economic, and racial backgrounds. The coach must give attention and instruction to all the skaters and make them feel a sense of accomplishment.
Is a skilled teacher,a clever psychologist,a practical philosopher,and a sensible negotiator.
Has more than just winning in sight.Long-term goals of helping young people develop physically, psychologically, and socially should take precedence over the goal of winning.
Which ice can we use for private lessons?
You are welcome to approach the coach you chose to speak with him or her privately.Currently, there are several options.

Why Join a Figure Skating club?
When skaters first begin lessons, they are usually provided with either a basic Skills Membership in U.S.Figure Skating or with a membership in Ice Skating Institute. These memberships enable skaters to participate in skating school exhibitions and shows, and take badge achievement tests.Full membership in U.S.Figure Skating is required to take tests beyond the basic skills and to participate in competitions beyond the recreational level.
Skaters usually join U.S.Figure Skating through a figure skating club.Membership in a figure skating club includes U.S.Figure Skating full membership.Skater can be members of U.S.Figure Skating as individuals, but most skaters join through a skating club.
Once a skater is ready to take official U.S.Figure Skating tests or compete in competitions beyond the basic Skills level,it is time to join a figure skating club
Private lessons are for any skater at any age who either wants to learn how to skate or who would like to improve upon the skills that they already know.Lessons are available for skaters who would like to learn or improve upon their basic skills, hockey skills or to advance into figure skating.
Q. What sessions are private lessons taught on ?
Generally, private lessons are taught on public sessions. However, there more specific sessions that you can schedule a lesson on such as freestyle ice (Figure Skating).
1. At the beginning we recommend to take 2 lessons per week. But if you are thinking about training seriously, then you will need to register for the club. By doing so, you will have additional ice time offered by the rink which is Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday. Obviously the skating equipment is very important, the figure skating boots and the blades. If you already have the skates, then it’s good, if not, then I am sure we could find something that will work for you new or used.
2. We usually attend about 3-5 competitions per year. But, since you are only skating at Learn to Skate then it’s too early to talk about any competitions. Normally, if we have new students who start skating with us, then in about a year they have an opportunity to compete and earn good places.
3. What we do is what’s called a pre-paid card. For new students it’s $180 for 6 lessons which is $30 for 30 minutes. And for the next card it would be $192 which equals to 6 lessons which is $32 per 30 minutes.
As for now, we used Monday Feb.6,13 4.15-5.15pm and Feb.18 Sat.2.30-3.30pm
If you have any questions, feel free to ask us. We are taking figure skating very seriously. Therefore, all our students are high level skaters. If that’s something you would like to try and to experiment, feel free to take a lesson or two and see for yourself, you are always welcome.
Thank you.
